As Storm Claudia swept across the country this weekend, bringing high winds and heavy rain, Derby Mountain Rescue Team found themselves once again keeping a close eye on rising water levels around our team garage.
Our current base has unfortunately seen its fair share of flooding over the years, and with the storm intensifying, we took the precaution—following our established flood protocol—of relocating our response vehicles to higher ground. This move, though routine for the team, is a stark reminder of the limitations of our existing facility.
Thankfully, although access was temporarily cut off by floodwater, the garage itself remained dry this time. A fortunate outcome—but one that could easily have gone the other way.
This near miss is a timely reminder of just how critical our new base build in Mackworth is. With mezzanine floors now going in and infrastructure work like electrics and plumbing on the horizon, the project is progressing well. But we still need your support to see it through.
Our new facility will provide a flood-resilient, purpose-built home for the team and our equipment—ensuring we’re ready to respond, whatever the weather.

Every bit of support brings us closer to a safer, more secure home for our team and the community we serve.
