The team were called out on Saturday 20th September 2025 to an injured person who was trapped in water near Dovedale. The request for help had been initiated via "emergencySMS" a text relay service.  The team responded, and were notified an East Midlands Ambulance Service ambulance had been assigned.

Upon arriving at Dovedale an initial search of the area was undertaken, with no evidence of a casualty being present. As sometimes locations are reported inaccurately by casualties a further search up to Lover's Leap was undertaken, and a second further downstream - again with nothing found.

As the team were stood down, we also received confirmation that the owner of the phone had been located safe and well at home and it was decided to be an accidental emergency alert trigger that they were not aware they had made.

What is emergencySMS?

emergencySMS is an SMS text relay service originally designed to help people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have speech difficulties communicate by phone. It allows users to send a text message that is relayed through an assistant, who reads it out to the emergency services and then types back the response.

While it was created with accessibility in mind, the service is available to anyone who registers. It can be especially useful in situations where speaking on the phone isn't possible—such as in loud environments, when someone needs to stay quiet for safety, or in remote areas where there’s enough signal for a text message but not for a voice call.
