Base Project Update: Summer Progress and What's Next
After a busy first half of the year and the excitement of seeing our new base begin construction in June, the summer brought some well-earned holidays for both our build group and contractors. While work on-site took a short break, planning continued behind the scenes, allowing us to catch our breath and reassess progress.
September Progress
In September, our groundworkers returned to site to complete the final phases of groundwork, including below-ground drainage, external concreting, and the installation of our vehicle wash bay. They also worked on landscaping and adding the finishing touches to our driveway and car park surfaces. A few minor tasks inside the building were also completed during this time.
One exciting addition recommended by the build group and approved by the trustees is a 6-metre wide concrete apron at the front of the building, spanning all three roller shutter doors. This large hardstanding area will allow us to park vehicles right outside the building, making it easier to load and unload in poor weather without tracking dirt inside. It will also provide a convenient space to remove muddy boots or drysuits comfortably.
Accessibility and Final Site Work
We've also continued the concrete around both sides of the building to ensure wheelchair access from all fire exits, complying with building regulations. The concrete path on the right side of the building links directly to our vehicle wash-down bay, equipped with a self-serviceable drainage grate.
To complete the driveway and car park, we're using 'Gridforce HL40,' a heavy-duty permeable paving system that will be filled with gravel. This low-maintenance solution offers free drainage, ensuring the car park and driveway stay in great condition with minimal upkeep.
Interior Progress
Inside the building, the internal perimeter has been sealed and grouted, and the drying room floor has been screeded, preparing it for future use.
Building Control Update
We’re happy to report that our Building Control officer visited the site last week and signed everything off without any comments or required actions! This is fantastic news and confirms that all work meets current building regulations and standards.
Next Steps: Internal Fit-Out
As the groundwork wraps up, the build group is already planning the next phase: the internal fit-out. This will include the installation of block walls, dry-lining, electrics, plumbing, heating systems, toilets, and internal doors. It’s amazing to think that we’ve come so far since Chief Constable Rachel Swann put the first spade in the ground on 12th February. We’re excited to keep the momentum going!
A special thank you goes out to everyone who has been involved in the project so far, from the build team to our sponsors, fundraisers, businesses, and volunteers. Your support—whether through raising money, donating materials, or offering your time—has made all the difference. Thank you!
