Matlock Skyline FAQS

Derby Mountain Rescue Team is a charity run solely by unpaid volunteers. They are oncall 24/7, every day of the year to recover climbers from precipitous crags, reunite lost walkers with their pals , and ensure injured and sick casualties on the hillside are safely delivered to vital hospital care. The funds raised will be used to fund the annual running cost of the team and towards finishing the much needed new base which is currently under construction.
If you would like to raise sponsorship, we would really appreciate it, and we can help you set up a sponsorship page. Please contact us at [email protected]
The minimum age is 18 on the day of the event. There is no maximum age!
The start time is between 8am and 9am for walkers, and between 9am and 10am for runners. This is to ensure that there is enough time for walkers to finish at a reasonable time, and for us to make sure the check points are open before you arrive at them.
The start and finish is at the middle of Hall Leys Park, Matlock DE4 3AR, near the bandstand. Look for the Derby Mountain Rescue Team’s vehicle and gazebo. You must register before starting the challenge. Feel free to stay around at the finish and chat to fellow entrants and team members.
It is mainly off road, following footpaths, with some sections of open moorland. There are some rougher sections and steep climbs and descents. There are some short road sections, please take extra care when walking on, or crossing roads
All our marshalls are volunteers, but have been trained to assist in running a safe and successful event. Please treat them with respect, and follow any requests they may make. Anybody who does not follow a reasonable request by a marshall, or is abusive or aggressive, will be asked to leave the event and not permitted to enter any further DMRT events.
Well behaved dogs are allowed, but must be kept on a lead at all times. The route goes through farmland where there may be farm livestock, and open moorland with ground nesting birds.
Please follow The Countryside Code. The event can only take place with the understanding of local landowners, so it is really important that all participants are considerate to those who live and work on the route.
A full list of suggested clothing and equipment will be emailed to all entrants, but you will need walking clothing and footwear suitable for the weather forecast, and either a map and compass, or suitable GPS device to navigate the route
It is not a marked course, so you, or somebody in your group will need to be able to navigate using either a map and compass, or suitable electronic navigation device. A route map and GPX file of the route will be emailed to all entrants prior to the event. We recommend you follow this route, but the most important thing is to visit all three checkpoints and the finish so that we know that you have got back safely.
If for any reason you don’t complete the route it is vitally important that you inform a checkpoint marshal or event control at the start/finish. We don’t want an unnecessary Mountain Rescue Team call out to look for you!
We hope that after entering, if for any reason you are unable to participate in the event, you will consider your entry fee to be a donation to the Derby Mountain Rescue Team. However, if we sell out and are able to re-sell your ticket, we will consider refunds on a case by case basis.

Please contact the Event Director at [email protected] Please note that T shirt purchases are non-refundable under any circumstances and if you don't collect your T shirt on the day of the event, you will be responsible for making arrangements to collect it from Matlock, or pay for postage for it to be sent.
In the unlikely event that we have to cancel the event due to severe weather or other unforeseen circumstances, we will contact you as soon as possible, and offer a refund. We would hope that you may consider donating your entry fee to the team, rather than receiving a refund.
It is supposed to be a fun day out rather than a race.
Derby Mountain Rescue Team will be providing First Aid cover for the event, but please bring your own first aid kit and any personal medication
There will be 3 checkpoints with marshalls, at approximately ¼, ½ and ¾ of the way round. Water and a few snacks will be available at each checkpoint, but please bring your own drink and food sufficient for the day. There are shops near the start / finish point in Matlock. There are toilets near the start / finish point and at the ½ way checkpoint.
If you are taking part, you should be comfortable walking a full day.
Some runners may be able to complete it in a little over 3 hours! Walkers are likely to take between 7 and 10 hours. There will be cut off times at the checkpoints, and if you don’t reach a checkpoint by the cut off time, you will be asked to retire from the event. Please respect and follow our marshall's instructions if this occurs. This is to ensure your safety, and to allow our volunteer marshalls to get home in reasonable time!
There are several pay car parks within 5 minutes walk of the start and finish in Hall Leys Park. If you don’t mind walking further, there is also free on street parking, but please park legally with consideration for local residents
