2021-3: Thor's Cave

Mountain Rescue deployed after shouts for help heard near Thor's Cave

Posted by on

Derby Mountain Rescue Team were called out to the Manifold Valley at 4pm on Saturday 16th January 2021 following reports of shouts for help coning from near Thor's Cave. It was believed that those shouting for help were injured, so West Midlands Ambulance Service were also called.

The party had travelled from Stockport to Wetton by car and walked to Thor's Cave, unfortunately they left the cave via "The Window" and quickly found themselves 'cragfast' on steep terrain. (You might remember several callouts in 2020 to Thor's Cave due to other people also exiting the cave this way).

As the team arrived on scene they liaised with the WMAS crew who had made verbal contact with party, and informed us that a member of the public had ascended up to them and was leading them back down. Fortunately, at this point they made it down safely and were taken back to the WMAS Ambulance.

There had been no injuries, but they were wet through, very tired, cold and shaken up by their ordeal.

The team were stood down, with vehicles being returned to base and decontaminated ready for our next callout.
