The Rotary Club of Matlock presented Derby MRT with a cheque for £3,500 at their most recent meeting on November 5th,
The money was raised from their annual Dovedale Dipper race and walk, in which 359 competitors took part in either a 26 mile run/walk or a 16 mile ramble. This was the tenth time that the event has been organised, with a different charity selected as beneficiary each year. In addition to the amount raised directly from the event, sponsorship from many of the participants increased the total amount of money raised to over £4,000. The winner of the main, 26 mile race was in fact Derby Mountain Rescue’s Medical Officer, Dr. Greg Crowley, an experienced ultra-runner who has competed is some of the toughest mountain and fell runs in Europe in recent years.
The cheque was presented by Peter Wigglesworth, President of Matlock Rotary to the Chairman of Derby Mountain Rescue, Nic Berry, who went on to say: “With annual running costs of £20,000 just to keep the team going, this money forms a significant chunk of that figure and we’re very grateful to all the Matlock Rotarians for their fantastic efforts in raising such a huge amount.”
The Rotary Club of Matlock raise between £15,000 and £20,000 each year for a variety of worthy causes and have raised money for Derby MRT in the past, including holding a collection at the Matlock branch of Sainsbury’s. The 11th Dovedale Dipper will be held on the 4th August 2013.
