MPA safety day at JCB's Kevin Quarry

Derby Mountain Rescue Team was invited by JCB & the MPA (Mineral Products Association - trade body for the UK construction materials sector) to attend their annual Safety Day held at JCB's Kevin Quarry, near Alton, Staffordshire.  The event was attended by over one hundred delegates drawn from MPA members, with six workshops addressing issues ranging from safe loading, emergency first aid, lone working, conveyors and prevention of respirable crystalline silica (caused by air-born dust).

DerbyMRT ran a safety workshop to raise awareness of the work of the UK's Search & Rescue Teams and highlight some of the safety risks associated with active & dormant quarries; with a focus on Search and Rsscue, Evacuation and illustrating how Mountain Rescue Teams may be able to work with other emergency services to assist with incidents at quarry sites.

Operational team member, and MPA Midlands Committee member, David Sandbrook commented

"The team were delighted to accept the invitation to attend this event, to highlight the work of our volunteers, show how we may be able to provide vital assistance at emergency incidents, and explain how we can be mobilised by calling 999 and asking for the Police and Mountain Rescue. 'so much more than just mountains' ".
